It is widely reported that there are a greater number of cases of
- Professional burnout and stress
- Mental ill health issues relating to dentists
- Increasing high levels of work-related stress
- Difficulties working within the NHS
- Stress related to professional regulation (GDC and CQC)
- Difficulties in clinical decision making due to anxiety and related symptoms There is growing evidence that there are specific groups that are at higher risk than other in term of mental health and professional issues namely
- Dentists aged 45 and above are most at risk of developing burnout or mental-ill health
- Female dentists are at greater risk of mental issues than males
- General dental practitioners are at higher risk of experiencing anxiety than specialists
There is also an established link with dentists experiencing increasing professional and personal difficulties and those dentists who are susceptible to associated risk factors such as depression, anxiety, burnout and suicide ideation for example.
